Raised in the Washington, D.C. metro area, Alex Simon came out west to attend the University of Idaho, graduating in 1988. He went on to build a distinguished career at Boeing before retiring and making Moscow his permanent home. For the past decade, he has served as a judge at the University of Idaho Engineering Expo, mentoring the next generation of innovators and teaching 8th Grade Science in retirement.
Alex is married to a Palouse native. He has 4 grown children including a daughter with special needs. Family life has deepened his commitment to ensuring Moscow is a supportive community for all. Like many in Moscow, Alex is an enthusiastic outdoorsman, he spends free time camping and hiking on the Moyie River and enjoying/photographing the natural beauty of the region.
Alex believes Moscow does many things exceptionally well—like the Farmers Market and great relationship with our police department —but sees ample opportunities for growth and redirection especially in the areas of business development, specifically attracting more businesses to the City and eliminating barriers to affordable housing. He is committed to strengthening support for Emergency Medical Services, and ensuring fields with lights for our young athletes and young families are developed. Moscow’s budget needs to be revamped and retooled to work for a new Moscow. His approach emphasizes trust in the city’s experts, collaboration with surrounding Latah County stakeholders, and improving communication between the mayor’s office, the city manager, and city engineers with Moscow’s families and students.
If elected, his first 30 days will be devoted to building relationships and setting priorities: meetings with the City Manager, City Attorney, City Engineers, the Chamber of Commerce, EMS, the Chief of Police, and the Moscow Fire Chief to name a few.
With a fresh perspective and a strong foundation in engineering, management, and family values, Alex Simon is ready to guide Moscow through its next chapter of growth while preserving the community spirit that makes Moscow “the heart of the arts” and much, much more. He is committed to “Govern better and spend smarter.”
